The Northeast Academy will host its inaugural Northeast Collegiate 7s Tournament on Sunday May 7th, 2017 at Pine Banks Field in Malden MA from 12:30pm to 7:00pm. For this 1st year, the tournament will be available ‘by invitation only’ to eight Men’s DI college teams from the Northeast Region. Executive Director, John McGeachy, says, “in our commitment to develop and grow the game in the Northeast region we are excited to host this tournament and provide an opportunity for these strong college programs to showcase their talent and for some to prepare for the CRC competition”, adding, “due to timing, and availability as a result of NCAA rules, we regretfully are unable to offer a Women’s bracket this year.”
Integral to its core mission of developing the overall quality of 7’s played throughout the region, the Northeast Academy invites all Men’s club teams throughout the NERFU and EMPIRE GU’s to attend, speak with the college teams and coaches and share any material about their club. The Academy also invites high school players and coaches to come out and use this as an opportunity to connect with the college coaches and players. “We believe that connecting high schools to colleges to clubs, from grassroots to elite competition, is a major part of our mandate”, said Academy Founder Steve Lewis, “ By strengthening connections and relationships within different levels of the game, we can ensure player retention in the Northeast, one of the hotbeds of American rugby”.
