NERFU (New England Rugby Football Union) has restarted their college select-sides this year and plan on submitting multiple teams into the NSCRO Regional Select-Side Tournaments. The NERFU College Men will create two 15’s teams, an East and a West, to compete in the Northeast Regional Tournament, hosted by Mystic River RFC on November 12, 2017. The NERFU College Women will enter one 7’s team in the National Tournament in Florida, in January.
Each men’s team will be made up of 18 different schools from all three NERFU Divisions, including the Champions, Challenge, and Development Cups. NERFU East will consist of teams from the Boston Area and Maine while all the other teams will be a part of NERFU West. The NERFU Women will consist of players from each of the five NERFU Women’s teams. NERFU East will be co-coached by University of Maine – Orono Men’s Head Coach, Dale Russell and Babson Men’s Head Coach, Carrick Pell. Both the NERFU West and the NERFU Women’s Team will be lead by Colby-Sawyer Men’s and Women’s Head Coach, Ken Pape.

Rugby has been an integral component of my Carrick’s life since 1996 when he started playing for the Birmingham Vulcans (AL). Carrick started coaching in 1997 at Jacksonville State University (AL) as he founded the college team. Coach Pell’s playing experience has covered the spectrum from social/fun tours to representing the Northeast Select sides. Currently, he plays for the BIW Grey Hounds and Old Breed Rugby. He has had the honor of coaching JSU, Charles River Women, Xavarian Brothers and Babson College. Additionally, Coach Pell is a Performance Coach with a specialty certification in training from World Rugby.
Ken Pape has a level 300 coaching certification, level 100 strength and conditioning certification, completed the USA Emerging Coach Development Program and is the current head coach at Colby-Sawyer College. Pape came from Rutgers University where he had a 51-11 record having reached the sweet 16 three times and the elite 8 once and never missed the national playoffs in his career. Ken has found success as a 7’s coach for Club Men and Women as well as collegiate Women, having reached the national tournament several times. Pape’s tireless work ethic and attention to detail has helped him translate his vision of the game to his players creating a learning atmosphere where his athletes have been able to express themselves both on and off the field.
