Summer 7s is HERE and it comes with no shortage of rugby competition. Kicking off this weekend (Saturday, June 16th) is the Boston 7s (hosted by the Boston Women’s Rugby Football Club), the 1st of five tournaments in the NERFU Championship Series (Men and Women). Open to all teams registered in the NERFU Union, the series will continue with Newport 7s (Saturday, June 23rd), Worcester 7s (Saturday, June 30th), Eric Memorial 7s - Springfield (Saturday, July 7th) , and finally will conclude with Boston Union Point 7s (Saturday, July 15th) where a Men’s and Women’s NERFU Champion will be crowned. Each tournament will also host a social division for those of you that would prefer a more relaxed summer! See the NERFU.org website or Facebook page for links to each tournament.
Also featuring this summer is the Northeast 7s Championship Series for both the Men and the Women (the inaugural season for the Women). This is a closed series (not open to all) and will feature teams from both the EMPIRE and NERFU GU’s all playing for the opportunity to compete at the National Club 7s Championship in early August. From NERFU, the Men’s series will include Mystic, while the Women’s Series will include Albany, Boston, Beantown, and Providence. This year the series will make a stop at the Newport 7s, other locations include Danbury (Men Only), Monmouth and Saratoga.
Playing won’t be the only opportunity on offer this summer. The Northeast Academy (a National Development Academy and High Performance organization sponsored by both EMPIRE and NERFU) will be hosting a 7s specific coach education seminar at Brown University, August 4th-5th (see FB page for details). It doesn’t stop there. This summer will also feature the Rugby 7s World Cup in San Francisco (July 20th – July 22nd) . This 1st of its kind event on US soil will surely not be one to miss!
Maybe 7s isn’t your thing? Not to worry, the long standing New England 10s tournament (hosted by Old Gold Rugby Football Club) is a perfect blend of 15s and 7s. Located in Acton MA on Sunday, July 15th, this tournament is always a club favorite. And of course, it wouldn’t be summer rugby without the acclaimed annual Can-Am Rugby Tournament in beautiful Saranac Lake/Lake Placid NY (July 29th-July 29th), an excellent opportunity for teams to kick off their 15s season.
So much rugby, so little time… best of luck to all teams this summer season!
