Maccabi Rugby to Help Distribute Thanksgivukkah Baskets

November 20, 2013

Boston Maccabi Rugby, a community service based rugby team serving the Greater Boston area, announced that they will partner with Sam Slater of the Slater Foundation and Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson to provide 1,000 Thanksgiving Turkeys, and 1,000 Thanksgivukkah baskets complete with mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and Hanukkah gelt (chocolate candy) to families in Boston this year.

The effort is funded in large part by philanthropist Sam Slater of the Slater Foundation, who is contributing $15,000, and will culminate at the Annual Tito Jackson Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway on Wednesday, November 20th, at 4:00PM at the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club, 115 Warren Street in Roxbury when turkeys and baskets will be distributed.

On Sunday, November 17th at 11:00AM, Councilor Jackson, Sam Slater, and Boston Maccabi rugby players will be at Hannaford's Supermarket, 55 Russell Street in Waltham, to pick up 1,000 portions of stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes.

"Community service is at the core of our mission and makes our rugby team stronger on and off the field, and it's an honor to be involved in this great cause once again this year," said Harry Shipps, Director of Community Service for Boston Maccabi Rugby. "Given the once and a lifetime opportunity to celebrate Hanukkah and Thanksgiving on the same day, we're glad we can add a little Thanksgivukkah flair to Councilor Jackson's yearly turkey giveaway."

In addition to financial support for the event, Boston Maccabi Rugby will rely on their rugby training to load and transport boxes of food and ensure they get to their intended destination safely.

"I am thrilled to once again join with Councilor Jackson and Boston Maccabi Rugby to kickoff the holiday season and make it a bit brighter for Boston families," said Sam Slater of the Slater Foundation. "It's a small way to show appreciation to the city we love, and a commitment to ensuring a Happy Thanksgiving for as many families as possible."

"This event has grown by leaps and bounds thanks to the generosity of the Slater Foundation and Boston Maccabi Rugby," said Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson. "This year we will more than triple the number of families we are able to provide for, and I am truly grateful for their support."
