7s Updates: Women's NRU 7s Qualifier, Nutmeg 7s Date Change

June 23, 2014

Summer 7s season is heating up! Worcester 7s just wrapped up and next weekend clubs are headed to Newport, RI for the Newport Summer 7s Tournament.

As we look ahead to July, NERFU 7s Executive Director John McGeachy has some updates for clubs:

1. The Women’s NRU 7s Championship is set for Saturday, July 19th and will be hosted by Saratoga Rugby Club, NY (Saratoga 7s Invitational). The qualifier tournament will be the Eric White Memorial 7s tournament on July 12th, hosted by Springfield Rugby Club, MA. All NERFU women’s clubs looking to compete in this NRU 7s Championship are expected to play in the qualifier tournament. The results will be used to determine the NERFU seeding.

2. The date of the Nutmeg State Games 7s has moved from July 26th to July 19th. The Nutmeg State Games offers an OPEN Rugby 7's Tournament and will be hosted by the City of New Britain.

Other NERFU 7s Announcements:

- Saratoga Rugby Club is cordially inviting clubs to their inaugural Saratoga Sevens Rugby Invitational. The tournament will feature men’s and women’s teams competing for NRU National Qualification, the fourth stop on the NERFU Men's 7s Championship Series as well as in a men’s Open Division.

- On July 19th Boston Women’s Rugby will again be hosting the largest women’s rugby sevens tournament in the country- the Cape Cod Sevens. What distinguishes the Cape Cod Sevens from most of the other summer tournaments on the east coast is the mix of fierce competition (several of the country’s top-ranked women’s teams attend every year) and chaotic fun (teams are strongly encouraged to play in costume)!

- July wraps up with the Connecticut 7s Tournament, hosted by the New Haven Rugby Club. It is also the last stop on the NERFU Men's 7s Championship Series.
